Overview
The Vigdís Prize for Women’s Empowerment is a prestigious annual international award presented by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) in partnership with the Government of Iceland. Established to perpetuate the legacy of its namesake, the prize honours the extraordinary contributions of Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, who, in 1980, made history as the world’s first democratically elected woman Head of State, serving as President of Iceland for sixteen years.

The prize seeks out and celebrates individuals, organisations, or initiatives that have demonstrated an exceptional and sustained commitment to empowering women and girls in all their diversity. It recognises work that drives systemic change, dismantles barriers, and fosters environments where women and girls can fully exercise their rights and realise their potential. The award is not merely for symbolic achievement, but for tangible actions that create a measurable impact on the lives of women, whether at the local, national, or international level. By championing these efforts, the Vigdís Prize aims to inspire further innovation and dedication to the cause of women’s empowerment across the globe.

Purpose
The prize celebrates efforts that:

• Advance gender equality and women’s rights.
• Promote inclusive policies, leadership and equal participation in decision-making.
• Strengthen women’s social, political and economic empowerment.

It aims to spotlight transformative actions that support women’s full and equal participation in society.

Prize Details

• Award amount: €60,000 (sixty thousand euros)
• Trophy and recognition: Awarded at an official ceremony.
• Ceremony date & location: 22 June 2026 in Strasbourg, during the Summer part-session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

Who Can Be Nominated
Eligible nominees include:

• Individuals (living)
• Civil society groups or associations
• NGOs (national or international)
• Private companies with impactful women-focused initiatives

Current members of the Parliamentary Assembly and deceased persons are not eligible.

Nomination Requirements
Nominations must be:

• Supported by the signatures of at least five sponsors.
• Submitted in English or French.
