Meet Dr. Nkiru Balonwu: The Nigerian Visionary Driving Africa’s Creative and Political Renaissance

Dr. Nkiru Balonwu is a distinguished Nigerian entrepreneur, policy strategist, activist, and founder of The Africa Soft Power Group. Born in Nigeria to a family deeply rooted in legal advocacy and social justice, she was raised in an environment where law was understood as a transformative instrument for societal change. Her father, the first Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) from Eastern Nigeria a prestigious legal distinction and her mother, both practising lawyers, cultivated a household frequently visited by legal luminaries, including judges from the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court. This early immersion in legal discourse, combined with her natural inclination toward debate, inspired her pursuit of a law degree and laid the foundation for her multidisciplinary career spanning law, policy, business, and cultural advocacy.

Academic and Early Professional Career

Dr. Balonwu’s academic journey reflects a commitment to global excellence and interdisciplinary scholarship, spanning three prestigious institutions across three continents. She pursued her legal education at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom, furthered her studies at University College London, and completed advanced legal scholarship at the University of California, Berkeley, in the United States. Her legal credentials are exceptional: she has been called to the Bar in England, Nigeria, and New York a rare triple qualification that underscores her international legal expertise and positions her as a truly global legal practitioner. In 2010, Dr. Balonwu was awarded the Founder Region Fellowship, a prestigious grant supporting women dedicated to improving lives globally. She won this prize under a Law and Social Science focus for a legal dissertation that analysed Nollywood’s potential as a catalyst for women’s economic development, foreshadowing her lifelong commitment to gender equity and creative enterprise. The fellowship, conferred by a gift-giving body focused on improving the lives of women and girls locally and globally by awarding fellowships to women who will truly make a difference in the world, recognised her early promise as a scholar and advocate. Dr. Balonwu commenced her professional journey as the inaugural Lecturer of Gender and Law at the University of Lagos Faculty of Law, establishing herself as a pioneer in specialised legal education in Nigeria. In this role, she contributed to shaping the next generation of legal minds while advancing critical discourse on gender and justice. She simultaneously contributed to legal journalism as Deputy Editor of the Law Column, where she provided incisive analysis of business-relevant legal developments and examined the intersection of law and commerce in the Nigerian context. Her corporate legal career advanced as she assumed the role of General Counsel, leveraging her expertise to guide strategic business decisions and ensure regulatory compliance across complex organisational structures. She further demonstrated entrepreneurial acumen as co-founder of Ratio Consulting, a business advisory firm providing legal and operational guidance to emerging enterprises, thereby establishing her reputation as both a legal practitioner and a strategic business advisor capable of navigating the challenges facing growing organisations in Africa’s dynamic markets.

Pioneering African Music Streaming through Spinlet

Dr. Balonwu assumed the position of Chief Executive Officer of Spinlet, Sub-Saharan Africa’s first music streaming and digital distribution platform in 2014. Her leadership catalysed significant milestones in the African music industry, establishing Spinlet as Nigeria’s first International Standard Recording Code Manager and thereby formalising recording industry standards on the continent. At its peak under her stewardship, Spinlet was Africa’s largest homegrown music streaming application, providing access to African-centric music catalogues and serving over two million subscribers. The platform revolutionised how artists monetised their content through streaming, downloads, and mobile distribution partnerships, creating new revenue streams for musicians across the continent. In a 2016 interview with WAN-IFRA, Dr. Balonwu articulated her customer-centric leadership philosophy, identifying micropayment inadequacy as a critical market challenge while pioneering the “freemium” ad-supported model alongside premium subscriptions. She noted that overhead often outweighed revenue dependent on micropayments, demonstrating her pragmatic approach to building sustainable business models in challenging markets. Her leadership at Spinlet earned her recognition in March 2016 when YNaija, in partnership with Leading Ladies Africa, ranked her among Nigeria’s 100 Most Inspiring Women for her work revolutionising music content distribution across the continent.

RDF Strategies: Communicating Africa Forward

Dr. Balonwu founded RDF Strategies in 2016, an organisational strategy and stakeholder engagement boutique firm distinguished by its women-inclusive approach to advising global, regional, and local multidisciplinary clients across the public and private sectors. Her ethos, “communicating Africa forward,” informs her dedication to initiatives focused on redefining the global perception of Africa and positioning the continent as a hub of innovation and opportunity. RDF’s expertise spans organisational strategy, stakeholder engagement, gender policy advisory, program design, emerging market strategy, government relations, development research, and market intelligence. In 2018, RDF Strategies was appointed to develop the concept for “Lagos to the World” (L2W), a global campaign by the Lagos State Government designed to drive foreign investment to the state. This landmark project demonstrated RDF’s capacity to shape international narratives and attract capital to African markets, establishing the firm as a trusted partner for government agencies seeking to enhance their global positioning.

African Women on Board: Rewriting the Narrative

Founded in 2017 by Dr. Balonwu, African Women on Board (AWB) is an independent, women-led African non-profit organization dedicated to promoting bold narratives that improve the realities of African women and girls. The organisation was launched internationally at the Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice in New York on September 26, 2019, during the United Nations General Assembly, with a mission to amplify African women’s voices and transform global perceptions of the continent’s women. The launch aimed to give a voice to African women and fundamentally change how they are perceived on the world stage. AWB’s flagship initiatives include leadership training programmes that support women’s entry into male-dominated fields, university programmes targeting students for skill-building in governance and enterprise, and advocacy campaigns emphasising skill-building and gender-inclusive governance. In 2021, AWB partnered with ElectHER and AGS Tribe to launch a one-million-dollar crowdfunding fund specifically to bolster Nigerian women’s political campaigns, providing financial and strategic support to aspiring female leaders ahead of elections. Dr. Balonwu highlighted how financial and campaign support could elevate women’s political participation, targeting direct aid for aspiring female leaders. She has consistently argued that women represent Africa’s greatest untapped resource. In a 2020 analysis, she argued that propelling women into leadership roles is vital for African business resilience, citing McKinsey Global Institute data indicating that Africa leads globally with twenty-five percent female representation on corporate boards, exceeding Europe’s twenty-three percent and the United States’ twenty-two percent. Yet she stressed the need for broader inclusion to double productivity pools and foster innovation through diversity, positioning gender equity as both a moral imperative and an economic necessity.

The Africa Soft Power Project: A Continental Movement

Dr. Balonwu founded The Africa Soft Power Project (ASP) in 2020, an Africa-led initiative harnessing the continent’s creative industries, knowledge economy, and cultural assets to promote strategic interests, challenge negative global narratives, and drive economic growth. The founding conviction was clear: Africa’s soft power and its economic prospects were more deeply connected than mainstream conversation acknowledged. Dr. Balonwu recognised the urgent need to incorporate vital, and all too often still unseen, African perspectives into the global conversation an important mission not only for Africa itself but for the global economy at large, particularly at a time when a host of intersectional issues threaten future and present growth. The inaugural Africa Soft Power Series was a virtual summit held from August 12 to September 4, 2020, featuring fifty speakers across fifteen days under the theme “Creative Power: Content, Culture and Platforms, Where Is The Money?” This event convened thought leaders to discuss government and private sector roles in enhancing Africa’s reputation, the integration of technology and sports, and sustainable development of creative industries. The summit has grown exponentially from a small founding gathering to a convening that now draws delegates from more than forty countries. The 2022 event in Kigali, Rwanda, was themed “Africa and the Global Community: The New Face of Collaboration,” while the 2023 summit in Kigali placed gender equity as a core agenda item alongside investment and narratives. The 2026 Africa Soft Power Summit will convene in Nairobi, Kenya, from May 20 to 23 under the theme “Africa’s Compound Interest: Aligning Ecosystems of Finance, Creativity and Human Capital for Growth.” As Dr. Balonwu reflected, “The compound interest is beginning to show.” The Africa Soft Power Group now encompasses a comprehensive ecosystem of initiatives. The Africa Soft Power Project serves as the core convening platform, while ASP International manages global outreach and partnerships. ASP Gender focuses on gender-focused leadership initiatives, and ASP Photographers, now in its third edition, turns young African photographers into climate advocates. ASP Climate builds climate literacy infrastructure, ASP Youth invests in the next generation of African leaders, and ASP Governance embeds accountability in African institutions. This integrated approach reflects Dr. Balonwu’s vision of soft power as a multifaceted tool for continental transformation.

Harvard Kennedy School Senior Fellowship

From 2022 to 2023, Dr. Balonwu served as a Senior Fellow at the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government at Harvard Kennedy School, under the sponsorship of Iris Bohnet, Co-Director of the Women and Public Policy Program and Albert Pratt Professor of Business and Government. During her fellowship, she led distinguished study groups featuring prominent intellectuals including Tsitsi Dangarembga, the Zimbabwean novelist, playwright, cultural activist, and filmmaker, and Chidi Odinkalu, Professor of Practice in International Human Rights Law at The Fletcher School. Her research focused on the private sector’s role in influencing and constructing gender policy, contributing to scholarly discourse on corporate influence in advancing gender equity globally.

Global Speaking and Thought Leadership

Dr. Balonwu has contributed her expertise to prominent international platforms including the Andreessen Horowitz podcast, where she spoke on technology in Africa alongside past speakers including NBA player Andre Iguodala and Oprah Winfrey. She has been featured as a “women on boards” panelist for the Financial Times and has spoken on how to better engage African women to thirty-five point six million listeners worldwide on BBC World Service. Her engagements extend to Chatham House policy roundtables, Harvard Kennedy School academic forums, and numerous international conferences addressing gender equity, creative industries, and African development. In August 2025, she delivered the keynote address at the QEDNG Creative Powerhouse Summit at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos, where she discussed scaling creative industries through innovation and strategic investment beyond mere funding. Her speech, titled “Creativity needs more than cash,” argued for a comprehensive approach to developing Africa’s creative sector that encompasses infrastructure, policy support, capacity building, and market access alongside financial investment. She is also a mentor at the Founder Institute, the world’s largest pre-seed startup accelerator, where she guides emerging entrepreneurs in building sustainable ventures.

Published Works and Intellectual Contributions

Dr. Balonwu has authored numerous influential articles and book chapters that contribute to discourse on gender, development, and African narratives. Her chapter in “Transforming the Global Feminist Movement” published in 2020 offers a critique of Western feminist narratives’ impact on African contexts, arguing for indigenous frameworks that reflect African women’s lived experiences and aspirations. Her article “Time for the private sector to get involved in reshaping Africa’s narrative,” published in This Is Africa on August 19, 2020, makes a compelling case for corporate engagement in transforming global perceptions of the continent. Additional articles published in This Is Africa and The Guardian Nigeria throughout 2018, 2019, and 2020 examine various dimensions of African development, gender equity, and economic transformation.
