Application Deadline: April 30, 2026

About the Fund

The Mama Cash Solidarity Fund is a targeted grant program supporting women’s funds that drive feminist change and social justice. Mama Cash is the oldest international women’s fund in the world, founded in 1983 in the Netherlands. Since its inception, Mama Cash has supported over 8,000 women-led, feminist, and social justice initiatives in more than 180 countries. The Solidarity Fund is designed to strengthen the women’s fund movement globally by providing flexible funding to women’s funds at various stages of development. Recognizing that women’s funds are uniquely positioned to support grassroots feminist organizing, Mama Cash invests in the organizations that are themselves funders enabling them to better support the activists and movements on the front lines of gender justice. Women’s funds who have previously received a Solidarity Fund grant are welcome to apply again. Applicants are not required to be a member of Prospera. The International Network of Women’s Funds to be considered for funding; nascent and emergent funds are welcome to apply.

Grant Benefits

  • Value of grant: €30,000 – €40,000 for one year
  • Flexible funding that can be used for organizational strengthening, grantmaking capacity, resource mobilization, or other priorities identified by the women’s fund
  • Support to help women’s funds become more sustainable, autonomous, and impactful in their grantmaking

Why This Fund Matters

Women’s funds play a critical role in the global feminist ecosystem. Unlike larger donors who may impose rigid requirements or prioritize specific issues, women’s funds are uniquely positioned to:

  • Identify and fund grassroots groups that are often overlooked by mainstream donors
  • Provide flexible, multi-year funding that allows activists to respond to emerging needs
  • Build the capacity of local organizations to be sustainable and effective
  • Center the leadership of those most affected by injustice
  • Model feminist grantmaking practices in their own operations

Yet women’s funds themselves often struggle to access funding for their own organizational development and sustainability. The Mama Cash Solidarity Fund addresses this gap by providing core support that allows women’s funds to:

  • Strengthen their internal systems and governance
  • Hire staff or develop grantmaking capacity
  • Build resource mobilization strategies
  • Become more autonomous from larger host organizations
  • Scale their impact in supporting grassroots feminist activism

By investing in women’s funds, Mama Cash is investing in the entire feminist ecosystem—enabling local, regional, and national funds to better support the activists and movements working toward gender justice.

Eligibility Requirements

Only women’s funds are eligible to apply for Solidarity Fund grants. A women’s fund is defined by the following criteria:

Self-led: Women’s funds must be led by the populations they seek to support. Those directly involved in or affected by the issues the fund is trying to address must be part of the fund’s leadership and decision-making.

Feminist: Women’s funds’ primary mission must be to support women, girls, trans, and intersex people in their efforts to uphold their rights. Women’s funds must also have a vision and strategy to challenge and transform unjust power structures.

Autonomous: A women’s fund is not a program of a larger entity and has independent decision-making over its grants and resource mobilization, or alternatively has concrete plans to become autonomous in the short to medium term.

Involved in both mobilizing resources and grantmaking: Women’s funds raise funds to provide grants and support to groups, collectives, and individuals that are organizing to defend and advance women’s, girls’, trans, and intersex people’s rights.

What the Fund Looks For

  • Are working to become more autonomous and sustainable
  • Have a strategy for grantmaking and resource mobilization (or concrete plans to develop these capacities)
  • Show potential for growth and increased impact with additional support
