About the Initiative

To increase digital skills and technology opportunities for girls and young women in Liberia, a youth empowerment programme has been launched: the Liberia Girls Can Code Initiative Pilot Coding Camp. In partnership with UN Women Liberia, the Ministry of Education Liberia is leading this initiative to address gender inequality in access to technology education and STEM opportunities. As part of a broader, three-year initiative to equip 1,000 young women with skills in digital literacy and cybersecurity by 2028, this pilot camp serves. Building on the continental African Girls Can Code Initiative, the programme aligns with Liberia’s digital transformation agenda and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Programme Benefits

By selected participants, the following will be gained:

  • Knowledge of emerging technologies
  • Artificial intelligence awareness
  • Cybersecurity skills
  • Entrepreneurship knowledge
  • Mentorship from women technology professionals
  • Leadership development experience

Eligibility Requirements

To the following individuals, the programme is open:

  • Girls and young women aged 15–24 years
  • Residents of selected counties in Liberia

Eligible counties include:

  • Lofa
  • Bong
  • Margibi
  • Grand Bassa
  • Maryland

The following should be demonstrated by applicants:

  • Interest in technology and digital learning
  • Motivation to participate
  • Commitment to complete the full programme

Why This Programme Matters

The gender gap in technology access and STEM opportunities in Liberia is addressed by the Liberia Girls Can Code Initiative. By providing digital skills training to young women, a new generation of female leaders in the digital economy is prepared by the programme. Partners supporting the broader initiative include ECOWAS, UN Women, Orange Liberia, Lonestar MTN, Stella Maris Polytechnic University, University of Liberia and the Federation of Liberian Youth.
