John Allwright Fellowship (JAF) 2026 – Call for Applications

Applications are now open for the John Allwright Fellowship (JAF) 2026, a highly competitive and fully funded postgraduate research scholarship administered by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR).

The John Allwright Fellowship is designed to strengthen research and leadership capacity among outstanding scientists and economists from ACIAR partner countries by supporting them to undertake a Master by Research or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree at a recognised Australian university.

The fellowship places strong emphasis on development-oriented research with practical outcomes that contribute to sustainable growth and positive impact in applicants’ home countries.

Fellowship Focus Areas

The John Allwright Fellowship supports research aligned with ACIAR’s priority areas, including but not limited to:

• Agriculture and agribusiness development
• Food security and nutrition
• Climate change adaptation and resilience
• Natural resource management
• Sustainable development and rural livelihoods

Applicants are expected to demonstrate how their proposed research will generate tangible benefits for their country and contribute to long-term development goals.

Fellowship Benefits

The John Allwright Fellowship is fully funded and provides comprehensive support for the duration of study, including:

• Full tuition fees at an Australian university
• Return international airfare to and from Australia
• Living allowance to cover basic living expenses
• Establishment allowance upon arrival
• Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
• Research support and professional development opportunities

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the John Allwright Fellowship, applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

• Be a citizen of an ACIAR partner country
• Be currently employed in their home country
• Be actively involved (currently or recently) in an ACIAR-funded research project
• Meet the academic admission requirements of the chosen Australian university
• Meet the English language proficiency requirements for postgraduate study in Australia
• Obtain formal endorsements from:

• Their employer
• The relevant ACIAR Project Leader
• A proposed academic supervisor at an Australian university

Application Process

Applications for the John Allwright Fellowship must be submitted online through the Australia Scholarships Information System (OASIS).

Prospective applicants are encouraged to begin preparations early, including securing endorsements and identifying a suitable Australian academic supervisor.
