About the Programme
The IJP German-Northern European Programme offers journalists an international fellowship to explore political, social, cultural, and economic connections between Germany and the Nordic and Baltic states. The programme supports cross-border journalistic exchange, providing up to 22 fellowships each year. Launched in 2000 with the five Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden), the exchange was expanded in 2015 to include the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. It thrives on the mutual interest between these regions: German journalists are keen to understand political and social developments in Northern Europe, while their Northern European and Baltic counterparts are increasingly interested in Germany as a major trading partner and cultural and political inspiration. The programme comprises up to 22 fellowships. While participants from the Nordic and Baltic states visit a German editorial office, eleven German fellows travel to one of the eight Nordic and Baltic countries. The experience includes an introductory conference in a capital city, where participants meet with leading figures from politics, business, and society, and a closing conference in Berlin to share experiences and deepen collaborations.
Fellowship Benefits
- Funding: A one-time payment of €3,800 for German scholarship holders
- Purpose: The amount is intended to cover part of the travel, food, and accommodation costs
- Note: A personal contribution is expected, and there is no provision for remuneration for work on-site
Eligibility Requirements
General Criteria:
- Age: Between 18 and 45 years old
- Professional Status: Working as a freelancer, trainee, or editor, affiliated with media outlets
- Nationality: Applicants must be from Germany or one of the participating Nordic/Baltic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania)
- Interest: Demonstrated interest in international journalism and cross-border cooperation
Language Requirements:
- Functional English ability is required for all participants
- Knowledge of Nordic languages is not required for German applicants
- Applicants from Northern Europe do not need German language skills

Required Documents:
- CV with a photograph
- A letter of recommendation from an editor
- Four written work samples. TV and radio journalists should send a comprehensive list of contributions
- Preferences for host media outlets and host regions (e.g., Munich) in Germany
