About the Programme
Ghent University in Belgium is offering a fully funded “sandwich” PhD programme for talented researchers from the Global South. The programme allows successful applicants to carry out part of their PhD research (24 months) at Ghent University, while the remaining research period is completed at their home institution in a Global South country.
What the Scholarship Covers
– Full funding during the stay at Ghent University
– Monthly stipend (approximately €2,500)
– Research bench fee for the Ghent supervisor
– Up to €8,000 for travel expenses
– Additional support for fieldwork and capacity building
Eligibility
– Applicants must be nationals of eligible Global South countries
– The research proposal must be jointly submitted with a Ghent University supervisor and a home-country co-supervisor
– Female candidates are especially encouraged to apply
– Applicants must have at least 36 months of PhD research left as of October 2026
Timeline
– Application Deadline: 17 February 2026
– Results Announced: From 20 May 2026
– First Stay at Ghent: Between 1 October 2026 – 28 February 2027
