Scholarship Types

1. David Sainsbury Full MSc Scholarship: Full scholarships are primarily intended for applicants from Least Developed, Low-Income, and Lower-Middle-Income countries.

• Full tuition fees (up to £36,000 for the 2026/27 academic year)
• Monthly living stipend (amount to be confirmed; based on UKRI postgraduate stipend rates)
• Reimbursement of up to £4,000 for economy-class travel expenses upon submission of valid receipts

Tuition fees are paid directly to UEA by The Sainsbury Laboratory. Maintenance grants are paid monthly in advance. Travel reimbursements are processed upon submission of valid receipts.

Full Scholarship Eligibility Requirements:

• Hold an offer of admission to the MSc in Global Plant Health at UEA
• Be a national or permanent resident of a Least Developed, Low-Income, or Lower-Middle-Income country (according to the OECD DAC list)
• Successfully pass the admissions interview
• Meet all academic admission requirements
• Submit a convincing Statement of Intent outlining plans to return to their home country within five years after graduation to contribute to solving plant disease challenges

Commitment After Graduation:

Recipients of the Full Scholarship are expected to return to their country of origin within five years after completing their studies. Graduates are encouraged to contribute to agricultural development, scientific research, food security, plant disease management, national economic development, and community advancement.

2. David Sainsbury 50% Fee Scholarship: Applicants from Upper-Middle-Income and High-Income countries, including the United Kingdom, are automatically considered for the 50% Fee Scholarship.

Benefits of the 50% Fee Scholarship:

• 50% reduction of tuition fees
• Tuition support for either Home or International tuition rates
• Direct payment of scholarship funds to the University

For the 2026/27 academic year, the scholarship covers 50% of the £16,000 Home tuition fee or 50% of the £36,000 International tuition fee.

Eligibility for the 50% Fee Scholarship:

• Hold an offer for the MSc in Global Plant Health
• Be from an Upper-Middle-Income or High-Income country
• Meet all admission requirements
• Successfully complete the interview process
• Submit the required Statement of Intent after receiving an offer

How Scholarship Selection Works

There is no separate scholarship application. Every eligible applicant who applies for admission to the MSc programme before the UEA admissions deadline is automatically considered.

The scholarship selection process includes:

5. Submission of a Statement of Intent

• Applicants from higher-income countries should describe how they plan to contribute towards addressing plant disease challenges in low- and middle-income countries.

Successful scholars are expected to:

• Pass every module
• Participate actively throughout the programme
• Live within reasonable commuting distance of The Sainsbury Laboratory
• Attend induction and welcome events
• Maintain communication with TSL
• Follow the TSL Scientific Integrity Policy and Code of Personal Conduct
• Remain in good financial standing with the University

Situations That May Lead to Scholarship Withdrawal

The scholarship may be withdrawn if a student:

• Is expelled, suspended, or excluded
• Provides false information
• Commits fraud or dishonesty
• Violates TSL ethics or integrity policies
• Fails to attend required induction events
• Demonstrates poor academic performance
• Fails any module
• Does not maintain financial obligations with the University
• Receives undisclosed funding from another scholarship
• Fails to cooperate with required scholarship communications

If withdrawn, recipients may be required to repay tuition fees, maintenance grants, and any other scholarship funds already received.

Scholarship Deferral Policy

Scholarship awards cannot be deferred. Applicants who postpone admission must compete again for scholarships available in the following academic year.

Marketing and Ambassador Responsibilities

Scholarship recipients agree to participate in reasonable promotional activities organised by TSL and UEA, including student testimonials, interviews, photography, public speaking, blogging, social media participation, Open Day events, and supporting prospective students. Recipients are also expected to complete a testimonial at the end of the programme.
