Applications are now being accepted for the position of female farmer ambassador to represent Ireland during the International Year of the Woman Farmer (IYWF). This global observance, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly, designates 2026 as a year to honor and elevate the contributions of women in agriculture worldwide.
The IYWF was launched by the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation to celebrate the essential roles women play in sustaining agri-food systems. Its objectives include increasing recognition of women farmers and promoting concrete actions to close gender gaps in agriculture while improving livelihoods for women across the globe.
Statement from the Minister
Agriculture Minister Martin Heydon expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative: “I strongly encourage women farmers across Ireland to apply to become our female farmer ambassador for 2026. The winner will have a unique opportunity to represent women working in Irish agriculture, promoting existing supports and initiatives while highlighting issues important to them.
“Over the years, I have seen first-hand the incredible work done by women to support our agri-food sector, which makes me confident that we can expect a high calibre of entries to this competition.”
Ambassador Competition Details
The competition is being administered by the Department of Agriculture following the United Nations General Assembly’s declaration of 2026 as the International Year of the Woman Farmer.
Application Deadline: Applications are open until February 12, 2026 and can be submitted through the department’s official website.
Role of the Winner: The selected ambassador will represent the department throughout 2026 by:
- Participating in key events
- Engaging in media opportunities
- Contributing to social media campaigns
- Encouraging greater female participation in farming
- Providing insight into life as a female farmer in Ireland through personal lived experiences
Announcement Event: The overall winner will be revealed by Minister Heydon at a flagship IYWF event taking place in Athlone, County Westmeath, on March 5, 2026. Shortlisted candidates will also receive invitations to participate in this event, which coincides with International Women’s Day celebrations.
Photo Competition
A parallel photo competition is being delivered under the IYWF banner in association with CAP Network Ireland. Prize giving for this competition will also occur on March 5, 2026.
Theme: ‘Empowered women transforming agri-food systems’
Categories: Five categories will each award a €200 prize to the winner.
Grand Prize: The overall winning photograph will be featured in CAP Network’s Ireland Women in Agriculture booklet.

Year-Long Programme of Events
Following these launch initiatives, the Department will organize information and networking events throughout the year at both national and international levels. These gatherings will celebrate IYWF and showcase Ireland’s approach to advancing gender equality within Irish agriculture.

Minister Heydon further commented: “Ireland’s co-sponsorship of the International Year of the Woman Farmer Official Launch Ceremony in December 2025 reinforces our commitment to recognizing the vital role of women in all areas of agriculture.
“Despite their hard work and dedication, women continue to face barriers when accessing land, finance and training, and this year provides us with an international platform to highlight the issue of gender equality in agri-food systems.”
