About the Scholarships

Sisters in Public Health proudly awards three scholarships of $1,000 each year in August to women who are dedicated to advancing their education in the field of public health. These scholarships are specifically created to provide financial assistance and encouragement to women pursuing higher education in public health across various academic levels, including Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate programs. The goal is to empower women to succeed and make meaningful contributions to the field of public health through their academic and professional pursuits. The three distinct scholarships are named to honor different academic stages and contributions: the Bourda Scholarship, which supports women at the Bachelor’s level; the Frazier Fund, aimed at women enrolled in Master’s degree programs; and the Lockett Award, designated for women working toward their Doctorate. Each scholarship not only offers financial support but also aims to inspire and motivate women to excel in public health, fostering a diverse and dynamic future workforce dedicated to improving community health outcomes.

Eligibility Criteria

Bourda Scholarship (Bachelor’s Level)

Public Health student in a Bachelor’s program
Completed at least 1st year of program
Basic membership status with Sisters in Public Health
Full-time student
Identifies as a woman in public health
Attends school in the United States
3.0 cumulative GPA

Frazier Fund (Master’s Level)

Public Health student in a Master’s program
Completed at least 1 term
Basic membership status with Sisters in Public Health
Part-time or full-time student
Identifies as a woman in public health
Attends school in the United States
3.0 cumulative GPA

Lockett Award (Doctorate Level)

Public Health student in a Doctorate program
Completed at least 1 term
Basic membership status with Sisters in Public Health
Part-time or full-time student
Identifies as a woman in public health
Attends school in the United States
3.0 cumulative GPA

Why These Scholarships Matter

Women are the majority of public health students and professionals, yet they face unique financial barriers to completing their education. Childcare costs, caregiving responsibilities, and the high cost of graduate education disproportionately affect women, particularly women of color and first-generation college students.

The Sisters in Public Health Scholarships address these barriers by:

Providing direct financial support ($1,000) to women at all levels of public health education
Recognizing academic achievement (minimum 3.0 GPA)
Supporting membership in a professional community that offers ongoing mentoring and networking
Awarding scholarships annually to ensure consistent support for emerging public health professionals
