About the Membership
Applications for the Call for 2027 Membership to become part of the Global Young Academy are now being accepted. The GYA seeks young, independent scholars who combine the highest level of research excellence with a demonstrated passion for delivering impact. Founded in 2010, the Global Young Academy is an international organization of young scientists and scholars that has grown to include over 300 members from more than 90 countries. It provides a platform and a voice for young scientists worldwide, enabling them to influence science and society at the highest levels. The call is open to all scholars working in research-based disciplines, including the natural, physical, and social sciences, as well as the arts and humanities. Applicants from government, industry, and non-governmental sectors are also encouraged to apply. To be considered, applicants must demonstrate a high level of excellence in their discipline, evidenced by a proven track record and anticipated future achievements. Additionally, they must show a clear commitment to making a positive impact on society, with a PhD or an equivalent degree being a mandatory requirement. The GYA is dedicated to supporting young scholars through various programs aimed at promoting science to broader audiences, engaging in policy debates, and fostering international and interdisciplinary collaboration. Therefore, applicants should provide evidence of interest or experience in one or more of these areas, aligning with the organization’s mission to create meaningful societal impact through scientific excellence.
Eligibility Criteria
Age/Career Point:
- In the early to middle years of their independent careers, applicants should be
- Born in or after 1986 and holding a PhD, applicants are eligible without any restrictions
- Their PhD in 2019 or later must have been obtained by applicants born before 1986
- A detailed justification of why they should be considered must be submitted by applicants born before 1986 with a PhD obtained before 2019
Expectations of Members
To attend the GYA Annual General Meeting each year, each GYA member is encouraged. On members’ contributions, as a member-led organisation, GYA relies, thus to actively contribute a minimum of 6 hours per month to one or more of the organisation’s programmes (projects and committees), members are expected, which may include:
- In science-for-policy or policy-for-science activities, participation
- At national or international levels, supporting science outreach and education
- In science diplomacy, engaging
- With the world’s young academies and further GYA partners, collaborating
Annual General Meeting: To attend the next Annual General Meeting, which is scheduled for 21 – 25 June 2027 in Indonesia, selected as new GYA members, applicants should be available.
Application Process
- Personally by the candidate, applications should be completed and must be accompanied by a letter of support
- A minimum of 30 minutes is required to complete the application
- To provide specific, personalized descriptions of their career journeys and avoid overly polished statements, applicants are encouraged
