About the Fellowship
For the 2026/2027 Sir Harry Evans Global Fellowship, applications are now being accepted. An unrivalled opportunity for an exceptional early career journalist is provided by the Sir Harry Evans Global Fellowship: a nine-month fellowship with Durham University and Reuters to undertake an investigative project. By top Reuters editors, the Fellow will be mentored while having access to Durham’s academics and research resources, and the opportunity to develop rigorous, fact-based research and reporting skills will be given. From inside a Reuters newsroom in London, New York, Sydney, or Toronto, the Fellow will pursue the project with the additional support of colleagues in Durham’s Institute of Advanced Studies. At the IAS, the Fellow will deliver a public seminar, sharing their learnings from the Fellowship and supporting the understanding of journalism at the University. One of the most distinguished newspaper editors of the twentieth century, the fellowship honors the legacy of Sir Harry Evans. Known as the “fiery crusader” for his relentless investigative journalism, Sir Harry Evans was editor of The Sunday Times and later The Times, and his work exposed injustices, led to legal reforms, and set new standards for investigative reporting.
Eligibility Requirements
A global opportunity, the Sir Harry Evans Fellowship is, and regardless of their current location, we welcome applications from all eligible candidates. Between two and five years of professional journalism experience should be possessed by qualified applicants. Where a prospective applicant is not currently a journalist but has worked in an investigative reporting capacity in a related professional field (for example, working as an author or researcher on authoritative investigative work; or developing in-field photo- or video-research projects, documentaries, or exhibitions), on a case-by-case basis, applications may be considered.
Selection Criteria
Based on professional journalism experience (2–5 years), investigative reporting skills and potential, quality of proposed investigative project, and alignment with the values of rigorous, fact-based research and reporting, applicants will be assessed by the selection committee.
Fellowship Benefits
- Monthly Salary: £4,444 per month (equivalent to a pro-rata salary of c.£53,333 per year)
- Living Stipend: £1,250 per month
- Travel and Related Expenses: A one-off payment of £1,800
