About the Grants

For its Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Research Grants 2026, applications are currently being accepted by the Northern Territory Government. Funding for research projects aimed at improving the understanding and response to domestic, family, and sexual violence in the Northern Territory (NT) is offered by the Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence (DFSV) Research Grants for 2026. Of the NT Government’s commitment to building research capacity, these grants are part, and with the Department of Children and Families (DCF) Research Agenda 2025-2029, they align. That can inform policy and practice, the grants support projects, contributing to a stronger evidence base for effective policies and programs for children and families in the NT.

Funding Details

Through National Partnership Agreement funding for research projects for up to two years starting 1 July 2026, a total of $200,000 is available for the Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence (DFSV) Research Grants in 2025-26.

From these suggested parameters, research teams may submit proposals that vary:

• Small projects: 6 months to 1 year. Budget: <$50,000
• Medium projects: 1 to 1.5 years. Budget: $150,000 to $200,000. Methodology: mixed methods evaluation with existing quantitative data source
• Large projects: Time frame: 2 years. Budget: $200,000. Methodology: multi-strand study or randomised controlled trial

Eligibility Requirements

To individuals and organisations, funding is available.

For Individuals:

• For the duration of funded activity, to be eligible for funding, an individual must reside in the NT
• Types of individuals that are eligible to apply for funding include: Any NT-based individual with the capacity to undertake research

For Organisations:

• Physically located and actively operating in the NT is required for an organisation to be eligible for funding
• Types of organisations that are eligible for funding include: Any NT-based organisation with the capacity to undertake research

Why These Grants Matter

In the Northern Territory, domestic, family, and sexual violence (DFSV) is a pervasive issue, with rates significantly higher than national averages. Disproportionately affected, Indigenous women and children are, and for service delivery, data collection, and research, the remote and regional nature of much of the NT creates unique challenges. That reflects the specific contexts of the NT – its geography, demographics, cultural diversity, and service landscape, effective policy and practice must be grounded in evidence. In the NT, yet research capacity is limited, and for DFSV research, funding has historically been insufficient. By providing significant funding (up to $200,000) for research projects of up to two years, supporting projects of varying scales – small (<$50,000), medium ($150,000–$200,000), and large ($200,000), prioritizing research that informs policy and practice in the NT, building research capacity in the NT by funding NT-based individuals and organisations, and aligning with the DCF Research Agenda 2025-2029 to ensure coherence with government priorities, the DFSV Research Grants address these gaps.
