The Afreximbank Internship Programme offers participants the chance to work with one of Africa’s leading multilateral financial institutions. The bank plays a key role in promoting intra-African trade and supporting economic development across the continent. The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) is a multilateral financial institution established to finance and promote intra-African and extra-African trade. Its shareholders comprise African governments, African private and institutional investors, and non-African private and institutional investors. The Bank was established under twin constitutive instruments: an Agreement signed by member states and multilateral organizations, which confers the status of an international organization on the Bank, and a charter governing its corporate structure and operations signed by all shareholders.

The Bank is headquartered in Cairo, Egypt, and currently operates branches in Harare, Zimbabwe (opened in November 1996); Abuja, Nigeria (opened in January 2003); Abidjan, Ivory Coast (opened in 2015); Kampala, Uganda (opened in 2019); Yaoundé, Cameroon (opened in 2021); and Bridgetown, Barbados (opened in 2023). The Bank also has private equity and insurance subsidiaries, including FEDA (registered and based in Kigali, Rwanda) and Afrexinsure (registered in Mauritius and based in Cairo, Egypt), as well as PAPSS (Pan African Payments and Settlements System, based in Cairo, Egypt). Interns are placed in different departments depending on their background and interests, allowing them to gain exposure to real-world projects, policy work, and financial operations.

Background to Internship Placement

Afreximbank Group recognizes that as part of its mandate to promote and finance trade in Africa, it needs to facilitate a broader understanding of the problems of African trade and trade finance, as well as the principles of trade finance especially structured trade finance, which is its operating model. By offering good students a chance for an internship with the Group, it is expected that students will leave with a better knowledge of the Afreximbank Group mandate and operating model, which they will put to use as they develop their careers. In return, it is expected that interns will contribute fresh and diverse ideas to the operations of the Afreximbank Group.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the Afreximbank Internship Programme, applicants are generally expected to:

• Enrollment: Students with proof of enrollment in full-time undergraduate or postgraduate study programs in a recognized institution of learning in the year of the internship are preferred
• Field of Study: Be pursuing or hold a degree in a relevant field such as economics, business administration, finance, accounting, social sciences, statistics, law, sciences, engineering, or related fields
• Nationality: Nationals of Afreximbank Group member states, students of African descent in the diaspora, and non-African students whose vision for the transformation of Africa resonates with the mission of Afreximbank
• Age: Candidates must be aged between 20 and 32 in the year in which they apply for the internship
• Language: Fluency in English or French and a working knowledge of the other. Knowledge of Arabic or Portuguese will be an added advantage
• Academic Performance: Demonstrate strong academic performance
• Skills: Possess good communication, analytical, and teamwork skills

Ineligible Applicants:

• Children of Afreximbank staff are not eligible to participate in this programme

Internship Details

Location: The internship takes place in Cairo, Egypt, a major hub for international finance and diplomacy in Africa and the Middle East. However, internships may also be available at other Afreximbank Group entities and locations, including Harare (Zimbabwe), Abuja (Nigeria), Abidjan (Ivory Coast), Kampala (Uganda), Yaoundé (Cameroon), Bridgetown (Barbados), Kigali (Rwanda for FEDA), and Mauritius (for Afrexinsure). Most internships will be at the Bank’s HQ in Cairo, Egypt.

Duration:

• Minimum period: 3 months
• Maximum period: 6 months
• Internships are offered twice a year (January and June intakes)
• The internship is not virtual – interns will be required to relocate to the headquarters of the group entity to which they are allocated

Work Arrangement:

• Interns will be taken through the Group’s normal induction process on commencement
• Attached to a particular primary department by the internship coordinator, who will select a mentor for the intern for the duration of their internship period
• Interns will be rotated around various value chain departments as deemed fit by the learning and performance team

• Monthly tax-free stipend of USD 1,000 payable at the end of each month
• Housing allowance of USD 500 for interns relocating from their home countries
• Reasonable return fare transport costs to the internship location using the most economical and direct routing from their institution of learning (before commencement)
• One week hotel accommodation (bed and breakfast only) during the induction period on arrival to the internship location (based on previous location)
• Transfer to the hotel on arrival and vice versa on departure at the end of a successful internship programme
• Relevant residence visa for the duration of the internship programme, if required

Important Notes on Benefits:

• The hotel accommodation costs cannot be exchanged for cash
• Interns are expected to take care of their own upkeep, including accommodation (beyond the first week), meals, transport, clothing, medical insurance, and group personal accident insurance
• Medical insurance and group personal accident cover valid in Egypt (or the given internship location) must be provided before the start of the internship; failure to provide this will lead to automatic withdrawal of the offer

Terms and Conditions:

• Interns are neither contract nor permanent staff of the Bank and are not entitled to any benefits that accrue to any of the Bank’s various categories of staff
• Candidates can intern only once (minimum 3 months, maximum 6 months)
• Internship does not in any way offer the promise of employment of any sort either before, during, or after the internship
• Interns must abide by the Group’s regulations and behave in a manner expected of all staff. Breach of regulations may result in termination of the internship and all attendant benefits with 1 day’s notice

Required Documents:

1. Letter of application – Explaining your interest and qualifications
2. Copy of current CV – Detailed resume highlighting academic and professional background
3. Copy of valid passport – Proof of identity and nationality
4. Certified copies of relevant academic certificates – Degrees, diplomas, and transcripts
5. Recommendation for internship – From the institution of learning you are attending, including the proposed period of internship (up to a maximum of six months)
6. Short Statement of Intent – Maximum of 1 A4 page indicating what you expect to gain from the internship programme

Important Notes:

• Applications are received throughout the year
• The Group is only able to take a limited number of candidates in each cohort, and only successful candidates will be contacted
• If you have not had any response within 2 weeks of applying, please consider your application unsuccessful; however, your CV will be kept on the database for any other suitable positions

Internship Commencement:

Once accepted, successful candidates will be given two weeks within which to accept a conditional offer from the Bank, or it will expire. During this period, they will be expected to show evidence of the possession of medical insurance and group personal accident cover that is valid in Egypt (or their given internship location) during their period of internship.

Interns will be expected to start their internship within the first month of each internship season (January or June).

Application Deadline

Rolling: Applications are accepted throughout the year. However, internships are offered for up to a maximum of six months twice a year (January and June intakes). Early application is strongly recommended because 30^th April, 2026 is first phase of the application deadline.
