About the Academy
For the 2026 Heinrich Böll Stiftung (hbs) Nigeria Green Academy, applications are now being accepted. An annual programme, the Nigeria Green Academy offers young and aspiring civil society activists, journalists, academic scholars, artists, and social entrepreneurs the opportunity to enrich their knowledge, ‘tool-box’, and networks to tackle some of Nigeria’s most pressing governance and development challenges. Through a mix of formats such as visioning exercises, fireside chats, and advocacy skill sessions, participants in the Green Academy are offered the opportunity to receive inputs on socially relevant topics and discussions, develop their vision for Nigeria’s future, think outside the box of how to achieve it, and generally enrich their knowledge, ‘tool-box’, and networks. As a vehicle to build a community of young Nigerians who associate with the foundation’s agenda, the academy serves. After completing the Academy, fellows would be part of an alumni network and would continue to benefit from having access to events, mini-grants, and information on funding opportunities through an alumni network. A German political foundation affiliated with the Green Party is the Heinrich Böll Stiftung. Ecology, democracy, human rights, and gender equality are the focus of its work. In Nigeria, initiatives that promote good governance, climate justice, and social equity are supported by the foundation.
Programme Details
- For five days, sometime in August/September 2026, in Abuja, the academy is set to take place

Why This Academy Matters
Complex governance and development challenges are faced by Nigeria: environmental degradation, climate change impacts, energy poverty, inequality, and democratic deficits. At the forefront of movements for change are young Nigerians, yet to scale their impact, many lack access to the knowledge, networks, and resources needed.
Through several approaches, the Green Academy addresses these gaps:
- A five-day intensive residential programme in Abuja is provided, bringing together diverse changemakers
- A mix of formats – visioning exercises, fireside chats, advocacy skill sessions – is offered to build practical skills
- Participants’ knowledge on socially relevant topics and discussions is enriched
- Visions for Nigeria’s future and strategies to achieve them are developed
- A community of young Nigerians committed to social and political change is built
- Ongoing support through an alumni network is provided, including access to events, mini-grants, and funding information
For young Nigerian civil society activists, journalists, academic scholars, artists, and social entrepreneurs aged 20–35, a fully funded opportunity to deepen their knowledge, expand their networks, and strengthen their capacity to drive change is offered by the Green Academy.
Eligibility Requirements
Civil society activists, journalists, academic scholars, artists and social entrepreneurs who meet the following criteria are being sought by the academy:
- Aged between 20–35 years old
- Determination, passion, innovation, and resilience in pursuing societal and political change related to the economic, social, and political development of Nigeria have been demonstrated
Programme Benefits
- To participants, there will be no fees charged
- By hbs, all programme-related travel, catering, and accommodation costs will be covered
