About the Course

The Gender and Transportation course is jointly prepared by the World Bank’s Transport Global Practice and the UN Women Training Centre with the collaboration of the World Bank’s Open Learning Campus and UN Women’s Safe Cities and Safe Public Spaces Global Initiative and Coordination Division. The course would not have been possible without funding from the Republic of Korea, Ministry of Economy and Finance. This e-learning course is designed for individuals who have an understanding of gender issues but who may be less familiar with gender equality in the transportation field. Primary audiences include policy-makers and advocates, though general audiences would also benefit from the course.

Why This Course Matters

Transportation is not gender-neutral. Women and men use transport systems differently due to gendered patterns of employment, caregiving responsibilities, safety concerns, and access to resources. Yet transport planning has historically been male-dominated, leading to systems that do not adequately serve women’s needs.

Key gender issues in transportation include:

• Safety and harassment – Women experience higher rates of harassment and violence in public transport and transit areas
• Affordability – Women often have lower incomes and may struggle to afford transport costs
• Accessibility – Women are more likely to make multi-purpose trips (e.g., dropping children at school, shopping, commuting), which may not be well-served by point-to-point systems
