About the Fellowship
Applications are now open for the 2026 APNI Young African Phosphorus Fellowship. The award encourages scientific programs focused on understanding and improving phosphorus (P) management in Africa’s field or tree crop agroecosystems. The African Plant Nutrition Institute (APNI) established this fellowship to support the next generation of African researchers working on one of the most critical but often overlooked plant nutrients. Phosphorus is essential for crop production, yet its management in African agricultural systems presents unique challenges: low soil phosphorus availability, high fixation rates in certain soil types, limited access to phosphorus fertilizers, and the need for sustainable management practices that protect water quality while ensuring food security.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be full-time scientists working at an African NARES institution (National Agricultural Research and Extension System) or African university
- Applications from scientists in Post Doctorate positions are also eligible for this award
- Only applicants who have completed their Ph.D. program will be considered
Additional Considerations:
- Evidence of any scientific partnerships and institutional collaboration will be reviewed favourably
- Female scientists are especially encouraged to apply
Proposal Requirements
Applicants must submit a creative proposal that addresses current knowledge gaps or synthesizes existing information leading to improved phosphorus management. Of particular interest are proposals that can address phosphorus management in combination with at least one of APNI’s high priority topics below:
- 4R Nutrient Stewardship (e.g., matching crop growth dynamics with phosphorus applications based on adjustments in source, rate, time, or placement)
- Carbon farming (e.g., biomass turnover and phosphorus applications)
- Soil health (e.g., residue management and soil phosphorus status, innovative phosphorus use and cropping system diversification, phosphorus management and dynamics in no-till systems, management of phosphorus in problem soils such as high phosphorus-fixing soils)
- Precision farming (e.g., innovations in addressing phosphorus variability at field scale)
Proposals should demonstrate creativity, scientific rigor, and potential for practical impact on phosphorus management in African agricultural systems.
Award Details
- Award Amount: USD $5,000 each
- Number of Awards: Up to five full-time scientists working in an African NARES institution or African university
Application Requirements
In order to complete the application process, applicants must submit the following in either English or French:
1. Proposal Description: A description of how the Fellowship will lead to improved understanding of phosphorus management in agricultural systems. This should outline any new research, data synthesis, or travel that will be supported with the Fellowship funds. Include sufficient detail that will permit evaluation of its originality, innovative approach, and relevance.
2. Two Letters of Support: Electronic copies of two letters of support, one of which must be from the applicant’s supervisor. Letters must be signed and written on official letterhead and include the phone number and e-mail address of the letter writer.
3. Resume/CV: A resume that includes date of birth, academic degrees, and any relevant publications dealing with phosphorus behaviour in soil, water, or plants.
4. Final Report: A short report will be required at the end of the award period that describes how the funds were used to support the outcomes of the proposal. All documents must be uploaded during the online application process.

- Originality of the proposed research or synthesis approach
- Innovative approach to addressing phosphorus management challenges
- Relevance to African agricultural systems and APNI priority topics
- Scientific rigor and feasibility of the proposed work

Why This Fellowship Matters
Phosphorus is essential for plant growth, yet it remains one of the most limiting nutrients in African agricultural systems. Unlike nitrogen, which can be fixed from the atmosphere, phosphorus must come from finite mineral reserves or recycled organic sources. Poor phosphorus management leads to low crop yields, soil degradation, and environmental pollution when excess phosphorus runs off into water bodies. African farmers face particular challenges: high phosphorus fixation in acidic and highly weathered soils, limited access to affordable phosphorus fertilizers, and lack of context-specific guidance on phosphorus management for different crops, soils, and farming systems.
The APNI Young African Phosphorus Fellowship addresses these challenges by:
- Funding early-career African researchers to pursue innovative work on phosphorus management
