About the NFVF
The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) serves as an agency of the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, with a mandate to ensure the equitable growth of the South African film and video industry. This mandate is fulfilled through the provision of funding for film development, production, marketing, and distribution, as well as supporting the training and development of filmmakers. Additionally, the NFVF commissions research and produces industry statistics that offer valuable insights into the South African film sector for both the public and industry stakeholders.
About the Bursary Programme
In alignment with its mandate, the NFVF invites eligible applicants to apply for International Bursaries in Film and Television Postgraduate Studies. This international bursary programme is designed to build capacity by upskilling South African film and television professionals, enhancing their global competitiveness. The programme supports qualifying applicants who wish to pursue overseas postgraduate studies in specialized areas not currently offered at South African tertiary institutions. Bursaries will be awarded for the 2026 academic year, with funding capped at R280,000, inclusive of both tuition and living expenses.
Qualifying Criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Submit applications at least six (6) months before the intended course commencement date
- Be a South African citizen or permanent resident
- Possess a good academic record
- Demonstrate financial need through supporting documentation
- Be accepted or currently enrolled at an accredited overseas tertiary institution for full-time postgraduate film or television studies
- Have a course commencement date in September/October 2026
- Apply for a course that is not available at South African tertiary institutions
Please note: Live performance and acting courses do not qualify for this funding.
Application Requirements
All applications must be accompanied by:
- A detailed motivation letter explaining why the applicant should be awarded the bursary
- All supporting documentation as indicated in the online application form
Important Notes
- Incomplete applications will be automatically disqualified
- Late applications will not be considered under any circumstances
- Applicants bear the responsibility of notifying the NFVF of any changes to their contact details
