The Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC) delivers the International Youth Fellowship Program (IYFP), a flagship initiative that enables young changemakers to develop and demonstrate their global citizenship.

Designed for recent graduates and young professionals eager to grow, learn, and create meaningful impact internationally, this fully funded fellowship is a powerful entry point into development work.

About the Fellowship

More than an ordinary placement, the International Youth Fellowship serves as a launchpad for global careers. Fellows are offered hands-on experience within international development contexts, collaborating directly with local institutions to design solutions that improve community lives.

How It Works

A structured pathway guides the Fellowship, ensuring participants receive thorough preparation and continuous support.

Application & Selection
Applications must show candidates’ dedication to international development and their leadership potential.
The selection process is competitive, prioritizing motivation, adaptability, and relevant background.

Pre-Departure Training
An intensive training program in Canada is undertaken by fellows.
Sessions address development contexts, cross-cultural communication, leadership, and practical skills for overseas assignments.

Overseas Placement
Placements with partner organizations abroad are arranged for fellows.
Roles span multiple sectors, including education, health, media, finance, and STEM.
These placements aim to challenge participants and broaden their professional experience.

Post-Fellowship Pathways
Careers in government, NGOs, academia, or international organizations are often pursued by alumni.
A continued commitment to championing global citizenship and development initiatives is maintained by many.

Eligibility Criteria

Individuals meeting the following criteria are welcome to apply:

• Canadian citizenship or permanent residency.
• Age of 30 years or below at the time of application.
• A completed university degree or equivalent experience.
• Demonstrated commitment to international development and global change.
• Evidence of adaptability, resilience, and readiness to excel in new environments.
