The Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) is pleased to announce the Charlotte E. Ray Legal Fellowship, a one-year, fully funded opportunity for early-career lawyers passionate about environmental and social justice. This prestigious fellowship is designed to provide hands-on experience in litigation, policy, and advocacy while honoring the legacy of Charlotte E. Ray, the first African American female lawyer in the United States.

About the Fellowship
As a Charlotte E. Ray Legal Fellow, you will have the opportunity to work with CLF’s dynamic team of attorneys and advocates across various program areas, including:

  • Clean Energy & Climate Change
  • Environmental Justice
  • Healthy & Resilient Communities
  • Clean Air & Water
  • Strategic Litigation
  • Oceans

You will gain valuable experience in designing and implementing impactful legal and policy strategies, working closely with community partners, and contributing to CLF’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Responsibilities
As a fellow, you’ll be responsible for:

  • Drafting and executing legal and policy strategies for CLF’s advocacy goals
  • Representing CLF in litigation and administrative proceedings
  • Developing and presenting written testimony to legislative bodies and government agencies
  • Advising community and advocacy groups on legal and policy matters
  • Building alliances and coalitions among stakeholders

Salary and Benefits
The fellowship offers a competitive salary, ranging from $75,000 to $89,000, depending on location, with an additional $2,000 increase after passing the bar exam. Fellows also receive full benefits and professional support, including opportunities for professional development and networking.

Eligibility
To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Hold a law degree by the start of the fellowship
  • Have 0-2 years of relevant experience practicing law
  • Demonstrate strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Show a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
