The Power Of Positive Affirmations

I recently got to know that Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia (a continuous decline in thinking, behavioural and social skills that disrupts a person’s ability to function independently). The Alzheimer’s disease is progressive disorder that causes brain cells to waste away (degenerate) and die (mayo clinic)

The early signs of the disease may be forgetting recent events or conversations. As the disease progresses, a person with Alzheimer’s disease will develop severe memory impairment and lose the ability to carry out everyday tasks.

According to a study at Kings College London, continuous negative thinking may increase a person’s risk of Alzheimer’s disease and currently, there is no cure for the disease.

We live in a world which requires making extra effort, taking some deliberate steps and making faithful proclamations daily to keep our hopes alive and become more resilience in the face of numerous adversities.

I have had experiences that made me truly realise the power of positive affirmations. Since then, I have made it a habit to repeat them regularly, as naturally as taking a sip of water.

When we speak positively about our dreams and aspirations, we instantly gain confidence and a deep sense of reassurance that our words can manifest into reality. Beyond the mental and emotional benefits, positive affirmations also contribute to better overall health and may even help reduce the risk of conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, thereby supporting a longer and more fulfilling life.

Below are more interesting powers of positive affirmations:

  • It Calms Your Nerves: Whenever we feel threatened or scared, the nervous system responds by releasing a flood of stress hormones which includes adrenaline and cortisol which arouse the body for emergency action. Almost instantly, our heart pounds faster, muscle tightens, blood pressure rises, breath quickens which increases our alertness and energy. This whole process can in turn lead to a state of confusion. But when we use a positive affirmation in the state described above, it calms the nerves and reduces anxiety and fear.
  • It enhances your ability to make great decisions: One situation in which people are often advised not to make decisions is when they are feeling anxious or overly stressed. This can be demonstrated with a simple experiment: imagine a friend facing an urgent issue in their life, feeling anxious, fearful, or convinced that something might go wrong. Allow them to share their thoughts openly and even vent their frustrations. After a week or two, revisit the same situation and ask them about the decisions they made. Often, they will say something like, “I was really under pressure, that’s why I acted that way.” The truth is that pressure is an inevitable part of life. One effective way to manage it and stay grounded is through the consistent use of positive affirmations, which help build confidence, clarity, and resilience even in stressful situations.
  • It makes you more confident: Fear is one of the major factors which affect our confidence level whereas positive affirmations helps to drive fears and keep us more confident.
  • It guards our daily thought: As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “We are what we repeatedly think all day long.” Because of this, it is important to guard our thoughts and consistently fill our minds with positive ideas. Negative thoughts tend to lead to negative actions, while positive thoughts encourage positive behaviour and outcomes. A quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson says that we are what we regularly think all they long”. As a result of this, it is advisable to guard our thoughts and fill it up with positive thoughts because negative thoughts breed negative action, which is also applicable to positive thoughts.
