2027 Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders – Fully Funded Leadership Opportunity in the United States – Apply

Application Deadline: Applications open September 22, 2026 (check the official Fellowship website for the 2027 deadline)

About the Fellowship

Beginning on September 22, 2026, applications will be accepted for the 2027 Mandela Washington Fellowship, through which young African leaders are offered the opportunity to participate in a prestigious leadership development and professional exchange program in the United States. The flagship program of the U.S. Government’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) is the Fellowship, designed to cultivate outstanding young leaders who are already making a difference in their communities, countries, and professions. One of three tracks may be chosen by applicants for the 2027 Fellowship: Business and Trade, Emerging Technologies, or Governance and Security. Emerging African leaders are brought together by the program for intensive learning, professional networking, leadership development, and exchange with U.S. institutions and professionals.

About the Mandela Washington Fellowship

Established in 2014, the Mandela Washington Fellowship has grown into an expanding network of young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa. According to the program’s official website, nearly 7,800 young leaders from all 49 Sub-Saharan African countries have participated since the program began. Outstanding young professionals and leaders with strong experience in leadership, innovation, public service, business, civic engagement, or other areas of community impact are recognized by the Fellowship. Rather than a traditional academic degree program, leadership development, practical learning, professional networking, and cultural exchange are combined by the Fellowship.

The 2027 Fellowship Tracks

One of three specialized tracks may be chosen by applicants for the 2027 program.

1. Business and Trade: For leaders working in entrepreneurship, business development, trade, investment, economic growth, and related fields is the Business and Trade track designed. Development of practical knowledge, exchange of ideas with peers, and building of professional relationships with organizations and leaders in the United States can be done by participants through the Fellowship.

2. Emerging Technologies: Leaders working in technology and emerging areas shaping economies and societies are focused on by the Emerging Technologies track. Exploration of innovative approaches, strengthening of professional skills, and connection with others working at the intersection of technology, leadership, and development are offered to participants by the track.

3. Governance and Security: For leaders working in areas related to governance, public service, security, policy, and related fields is the Governance and Security track intended. Exchange of perspectives with other African leaders and engagement with U.S. institutions and professionals are among the opportunities available to participants.

What Does the Fellowship Include?

An intensive six-week Leadership Institute at a U.S. college or university is included in the Mandela Washington Fellowship. Participation in academic and practical activities is undertaken by Fellows while experiences and perspectives are shared with their peers and U.S. communities. Depending on the Fellowship cycle and participant selection, program activities can include:

  • Leadership and professional development
  • Academic and practical learning
  • Networking with other African leaders
  • Interaction with U.S. businesses, organizations, and professionals
  • Community and cultural activities
  • Opportunities to exchange ideas and experiences across sectors
  • Continued engagement through the Fellowship’s alumni network

Professional and reciprocal exchange opportunities designed to strengthen relationships between African and U.S. participants are also included in the broader Fellowship.

Who Should Apply?

Aimed at young African leaders aged 25 to 35 who have established records of leadership and accomplishment is the Mandela Washington Fellowship. Described by the official Fellowship as accomplished innovators and leaders who have demonstrated positive impact in their communities and countries are its participants.

Previous Fellowship eligibility requirements have included applicants who:

  • Are between 25 and 35 years old at the time specified by the application cycle, although exceptional applicants aged 21–24 may be considered

  • Are proficient in English
  • Are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents
  • Are eligible to receive a U.S. J-1 visa

What Makes a Strong Applicant?

Highly competitive is the Fellowship, and applicants with evidence of leadership, achievement, service, and professional experience are looked for. Several areas have been emphasized by previous official application guidance, including:

  • Demonstrated Leadership and Accomplishment: What they have achieved through their professional, entrepreneurial, civic, or community work should be able to be shown by applicants.
  • Commitment to Community or Public Service: Experience in volunteering, mentoring, community service, or initiatives that benefit others can strengthen an application.
  • Relevant Experience in Your Chosen Track: Clear connection to the Fellowship track you select should be made by your professional and leadership experience. For example, meaningful experience or engagement in technology or a related field should be able to be demonstrated by an applicant choosing Emerging Technologies.
  • Clear Goals: How participating in the Fellowship would contribute to their current work and future goals should be explained by applicants.
  • Commitment to Africa: The importance of applicants’ plans to use their skills and experience to contribute to their communities and countries in Africa has been emphasized by previous Fellowship guidance.

How Competitive Is the Fellowship?

A competitive international leadership program is the Mandela Washington Fellowship. Review of applications is made against established selection criteria, with emphasis on leadership experience, community or public service, relevant professional experience, and the applicant’s goals for participating in the Fellowship. Treating the application as simply an academic application should therefore be avoided by applicants. What you have done, the impact you have achieved, what you have learned, and how the Fellowship connects to your future work should be demonstrated in your application. Use of concrete examples and real-world experiences when responding to application questions is recommended by the official Fellowship.
